Reading with Roland Barthes

This graduate seminar explores the work of Roland Barthes (1915-1980), one of the most influential literary critics of the twentieth century. We will read Barthes’s major critical works along with some the key literary texts he examines (by Balzac, Zola, Loti, Robbe-Grillet and others). We will consider Barthes’s engagement with and influence on critical approaches including Semiotics, Structuralism and Poststructuralism, Photography Studies, and Affect Studies. Taught in French.
