Criminal Justice System

In this course, we will explore the relationships among the different actors and institutions that constitute the criminal justice system.  Some of the key issues that we study are the role of law in shaping the behaviors, attitudes, and values of those actors and institutions; the importance of discretion in the operation of the criminal justice system; and the enduring relevance of race in every stage of criminal processing.  We will draw largely on empirical research conducted by sociologists and criminologists, but also by psychologists, political scientists, and lawyers.  Finally, this course will encourage you to ask meaningful and probing questions about various policy proposals made by politicians and government officials in the area of crime control.
