Introduction to Sociology

Sociology is the most comprehensive of the social sciences; sociologists study every aspect of social life from interpersonal communication to war and peace among nations.  In this course, we will discuss some of the foundational concepts that are the basis for most sociological analysis and use those concepts to ask questions about the most pressing issues facing society. We will pay particular attention to inequality and the most common social structures that support inequality.  And finally, we will look at specific areas of sociological study where we can apply these concepts – medicine and health, science and technology, capitalism, the state, and social movements.
