Elementary Korean I

KOR 201 (Elementary Korean I) is a first semester course of Korean for students without any background of the Korean language. The course starts from the Korean Alphabet (Hangul), and you will learn basic vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structures as well as commonly used expressions. Each lesson is situation or topic-based and consists of model dialogues, narration, and oral and written wrap-up tasks. Topics include daily activities and personal environment such as campus life, classes, etc. You will be expected to engage in vocabulary-building, target structure-focused, and simple, routine conversational tasks in various formats and learn to use culturally appropriate expressions for familiar settings.


By the end of this course, you are expected to achieve the following fluency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills:

  • Can communicate using a number of memorized phrases and isolated words in some familiar contexts
  • Can recognize and understand a number of highly frequent and contextualized words and phrases, and understand some information from sentence-length speech in basic personal and social contexts
  • Can create simple sentences on familiar topics

KOR221 Korean Reading and Writing I

FA 2020 KOR 305 will be taught as remote instruction and will require students to meet synchronously from 11 am to 11:50 am (CST) on MTWRF (5 days a week). This course will provide a communicative learning environment through Zoom, Moodle, Google Doc, Padlet, Quizlet, and Flipgrid.

This course requires access to a reliable computer with high-speed internet, a webcam, and headsets with a microphone. Students will be asked to turn on their cameras during class meetings and upload digital images and videos of their works as well.

Before each class, students are required to study the vocabulary through online activities and read the textbook, as class time is assigned to real-life based practices and communicative activities, where students will practice reading, listening, speaking and writing through tasks.
